Stump Removal and Stump Grinding

When it comes to getting rid of tree stumps, a professional tree service is required. They retain the proper licensing, tools, training, and equipment to facilitate these kinds of job safely and correctly. Not only can improper tree work be a hazard to you, it can be a danger to the surrounding property, neighbors, children, houses, parked cars, and more. Tree accidents can be fatal if left in the hands of a novice. Always call a professional tree service company that has the experience to remove tree stumps without jeopardizing the safety and well-being of your property and surrounding landscape.

When it comes to tree stump removal, a professional technician uses a variety of tools and methods for extraction. The type of removal process and tools required for the job largely depends on the size, age, and condition of the stump. A tree service technician will not know which tools and equipment they need until they get their hands on the job and see the stump in person.

Tools like manual saws, chainsaws, blades, grinders, ropes, bungee cords, and more are used to remove or grind down tree stumps. Alternative methods to stump removal include the usage of chemicals to breakdown the stump and basically disintegrate it; or covering in topsoil to promote natural decay.  The quickest solution to tree stump removal is usually stump grinding. A professional tree care company has what it takes to get this job done for you at the right price.

How to Treat Tree Fungus in November

Because the winter season brings with it moist and dull conditions, it is an ultimate time for fungi to grow. Since tree bark retains moisture well this time of year, fungal outbreaks tend to happen on trees. This is detrimental for tree health since it can lead to poor growth in new branches, spring shoots, leaves and buds.

If your landscaping trees are ridden with fungi growth, you can opt for an annual fungicidal spraying treatment, or you can make your own homemade fungal solution and apply it yourself. To make your own tree fungi solution, all you need are a few simple supplies and a 30 minute window to get rid of tree fungus for good.

Continue reading to learn how to get started.

What You Will Need

The only supplies you will need to get rid of tree fungus include a pair of pruning shears, household bleach, a large bucket, garbage bags, and water. It helps to have a garden hose.

How to Remove Tree Fungus

Start by combing 1 part bleach with 3 parts water in your large bucket. Then place the blades of your pruning shears in the mixture and allow it to sit for five minutes.

After five minutes, rinse the shears clean. This ensures that no additional infection is transmitted when cutting back bark.

Next, using your pruning shears, cut off any affected branches.

Promptly transfer the removed limbs into a plastic garbage bag to prevent spreading. You do not want to use these infected branches in your compost or landscaping.

Annual Tree Fungal Treatment Solution

To better manage fungal growths in fall and winter, you can make a homemade fungal treatment for annual use. Here’s what you will need:

⛋ Long-Sleeved Shirt
⛋ Long Pants
⛋ Dust Mask
⛋ Safety Glasses
⛋ Household Bleach
⛋ Bucket
⛋ Long-Handled Spoon
⛋ Garden Hose
⛋ Pruning Saw
⛋ Bordeaux Mixture (Recommended: Bonide® Natural Copper Fungicide)
⛋ Garden Sprayer

How to Apply an Annual Treatment

Put on all of your protective gear. Then make your solution.

Mix your tree fungal solution by combining 1 tablespoon of Bordeaux mixture in 1 gallon of water, and then transfer the mixture to your garden sprayer.

Using your garden sprayer, generously spray all limbs and leaves with your solution. In February, once tree buds begin to swell up, repeat this step for added protection.

The copper sulfate and hydrated lime in the Bordeaux are the key ingredients to tree fungal treatment and prevention.

By developing and implementing a fall tree care and maintenance plan, you will better ensure your landscaping trees will remain healthy and strong, and exhibit fuller foliage growth with every passing season. Here is a recommended tree care checklist for the fall season that you can use to develop your own plan:

☑ Continue to Water Your Evergreen Trees

Your evergreen trees still need water this time of year. This is especially true for young or newly transplanted trees.

☑ Check for Infestations

Inspect your landscaping trees for signs of pest infestations or tree diseases. If you are unsure of the condition of your tree, contact a tree care provider for a professional inspection.

☑ Resolve Tree Issues

If you discover infestations, wildlife damage, or diseases, have them mitigated or treated as soon as possible. Some tree diseases can spread, and certain infestations can pose health risks.

☑ Prune Your Trees

Tree pruning is one of the most recommended practices for tree care. It stimulates tree growth, making them stronger and live longer. Always have trees pruned professionally, as one incorrect cut can cause rapid tree decline.

☑ Mulch Your Trees

Be sure your landscaping trees are well-insulated for cooler temperatures by mulching around their base. Even if you mulched early this year, it is wise to add an extra layer for enhanced insulation.

☑ Consider Tree Fertilization

Some property owners benefit from slow-release tree fertilizers, which can provide supplementary nutrients during the cold months. This is helpful for young trees located near several other plants.

☑ Remove Fallen Leaves

After all the leaves have dropped from the trees, do your best to remove piles from around the base of your trees. Too much leaf accumulation can cause wet bark, which can lead to fungal diseases and pest infestations.

☑ Cable and Brace Your Trees

If you have unstable, young, or damaged trees on your property, you will benefit from bracing or staking them. This will provide extra support and security. For large trees, be sure to hire a professional contractor for cabling and bracing services.

☑ Contact a Tree Service Company

For an accurate evaluation of your property’s tree care needs, contact a licensed tree service company. They can provide an on-site assessment and help you create a fall tree care plan that is both viable and within budget.

What Does Tree Windthrow Mean?

Now that summer is coming to a close, we can expect to see the weather and climate change too. This might include some colder temperatures, higher precipitations, and even heavy winds. Especially with Hurricane Dorian in effect, we are not unreasonable to have concerns about heavy wind storms.

In fact, many homeowners have asked about wind tree damage, and what they can do to prevent it from happening to their own landscaping trees. One such consequence of heavy winds is falling or toppling trees, an occurrence known as windthrow.

Continue reading to learn more about tree windthrow, including how to help prevent it and what you can do if a tree falls on your property.

Tree Windthrow

Also known as blowdown, tree windthrow is a term used in the forestry industry to describe trees that fall over or uproot as a result of heavy winds and storms. Tree species that tend to be more susceptible to windthrow are willow white spruce, cedar, and white pine. However, all trees can fall over in inclement weather conditions, especially if they are malnourished, dying, or dead.

Common Signs of a Dead or Dying Tree

The most vulnerable trees to blowdown are sick, dying, and dead trees. These trees lack the stability and strength needed to withstand inclement weather such as heavy wind storms. You will know if your trees are dying or already dead by looking for some common signs.

Dead Trees – Gray inner flesh of twigs and bark, pest infestations, etc.

Dying Trees – Pest infestations, bark damage, fungal growth, leaf discoloration or loss, etc.

Uprooted Trees

When winds and storms are strong enough, or if a tree is large enough, it can come out of the ground completely. This is known as tree uprooting. When the root ball and connecting roots are exposed after a tree falls down, the tree is described as being uprooted. See our blog, “Is it Possible to Replant Uprooted Trees?” to learn your options for uprooted trees. If your tree cannot be transplanted, it will likely need to be removed. Contact a licensed Noblesville tree service company to have it removed, safely.

Common Misconceptions About Willow Trees

Although incredibly stunning and majestic, Willow trees have a bad reputation for destroying pipes, utilities, foundations, and other similar underground systems or structures. But the truth is, any water-loving tree or shrub with massive roots can do this, not exclusively Willow species. If you are considering adding or removing a Willow tree from your property for the sake of avoiding the consequences of invasive tree roots, try not to be so hasty. A willow tree might be the perfectly suitable and nonthreatening asset to your yard.

Continue reading to learn more about Willow trees, including how to keep both your trees and your underground pipelines safe from tree root damage or interference.

Noblesville Tree Removal 317-537-9770
Noblesville Tree Removal 317-537-9770

Invasive Tree Roots

The top misconception about Willow trees is that their roots are aggressively invasive, and will enter into underground pipes, plumbing, utility lines, utility systems, and foundations. This is a misconception because technically, all roots are invasive by nature. Regardless of species, roots will grow toward sources of water, and continue to grow for as long as the surrounding environment allows them to.

The reason why people think Willows are more invasive than most other tree species is due to the fact that they are water-loving trees with quick growing roots. But just because their roots grow fast does not mean that they are more capable of damaging or blocking pipes, utility systems, foundations, septic tanks, swimming pools, drainage fields, and more.

If a Willow tree does invade such structures or systems, it is because they were vulnerable or defective. You see, a tree root will not penetrate a pipe or foundation, but if underground pipes are already corroded or cracked, or a foundation is actively crumbling, the root will take advantage of these sources of moisture. So long as your foundation, plumbing, and underground utilities are all in good condition, and you stay on top of routine maintenance, a nearby Willow tree root system should not be a threat.

Another common misconception about Willow trees is that they are more prone to falling over as a shallow rooted species. Understandably, this can be quite concerning in terms of property damage and personal safety. However, there are various other tree species that grow much shallower root systems, and therefore, more prone to tipping over, such as the Blue Spruce.

Willow Tree Considerations

Although only a few species of Willow tree out of more than 500 are known to contribute to their bad reputation, it is still wise to take some precautions. For instance, avoid planting Willow trees too close to older homes and buildings, as their underground plumbing systems might be more weathered and corroded, and thus vulnerable to tree root invasion. Also, to be safe, avoid planting Willows near drainage fields or septic systems.

If you already have mature or growing Willow trees on your property, and you are concerned about their root growth, routine pruning can help control the canopy growth, which in turn, controls the size of the root system. This can help prevent your tree roots from growing too large, too soon, and disruption areas of your property. If you live on a creek or river, and you wish to add a Willow tree to your property, position it close to the bank.

Is My Tree Getting Too Much Sun?

Although trees require sunlight for process of photosynthesis to take place, it is possible for a tree to receive too much sunlight, especially if they are newly planted or young. As a result, trees can experience a long list of negative health implications, including foliage loss and discoloration, leaf scorch, and more. Fortunately, there are several ways to protect trees from excessive sun exposure, all of which are go-to methods for both commercial and residential properties.

Continue reading to learn the top 4 tips and tricks for reducing the amount of sun and heat your landscaping trees are exposed to in the summer.

Noblesville Tree Service 317-537-9770
Noblesville Tree Service 317-537-9770

The General Rule of Green Thumb

First and foremost, be sure you are planting full-sun plants and trees in areas of your yard that are in full sun all day long, or at least 8 hours. In areas of your yard that are full sun, you do not want to plant partial-sun or partial-shade tree species, otherwise, you are putting them at a very high risk of sun overexposure.

If you have trees planted in areas of your yard that get too much sun exposure, rather than transplanting them, which can subject your trees to transplant shock and more, try implementing these 4 trusted methods instead:

❶ Install Floating Rows

Floating row covers are lightweight cloth tarps that hang over a tree to provide a blanket of shade. This method works best for young or newly planted trees under 3 feet tall. As an alternative, you can purchase cotton or burlap tarps and drape them over your tree during the hottest parts of the afternoon.

❷ Incorporate Shady Plants

You can plant bushy, tall plants around your tree to provide extra shade. As these plants grow throughout the season, they will cast a larger shadow around your tree. Consider ornamental grasses that grow tall and plentiful. Just be sure they are a full-sun species!

❸ Create a Proper Mulch Bed

A proper mulch application goes a long way when it comes to protecting landscaping trees. It keeps the soil cool and moist, which allows the tree to retain more water, and therefore, combat excessive sun. Regardless of age, species, or location, all planted trees should have a proper mulch bed around their base. See our blog, “Mulching Tips for Tree Care” to learn the recommended guidelines.

❹ Water EVERYDAY

Water your trees more than you would normally water them so that the soil does not dry out. Trees should get five gallons of water per inch of their trunk’s diameter, over an extended period of time. Do not water during the hottest part of the day because a large percentage will just evaporate in the heat. Instead, water in the early morning or in the evening.

Why is Mold Growing on My Tree Trunk?

Have you recently noticed a greenish-white or orange-colored film developing on the outside of your tree’s bark? Is so, you may assume it is mold, but really, it is a harmless fungi known as tree lichens. Continue reading to learn more about tree lichens, including its causes, treatments, prevention, and more.

Noblesville Tree Service 317-537-9770

Tree Lichen Fungus

Tree lichens are actually two living organisms, fungus and algae, which both share in a mutually-beneficial relationship known as symbiosis. The fungus collects and retains moisture, which algae needs to thrive, while the algae uses photosynthesis (converting the sun’s energy into food) to make food for the fungus to feed on. This symbiotic relationship does not negatively affect trees in a physical sense. Tree lichens contain rhizines, which are similar to a root system, but they do not reach far enough into the ground to affect the tree’s root system in any way.

Getting Rid of Tree Lichens

Although tree lichens will not damage or kill a tree, many homeowners complain that it makes their landscaping trees look bad. Fortunately, there are some simple and effective methods for removing tree lichens from trees, safely. Here are some recommended methods to try on your own landscaping trees:

❧ Scraping

You can gently scrape tree lichens off of the bark of trees using a mild soapy solution and a soft bristled brush. Combine a mild dish soap with some clean, warm water, and then delicately apply the solution to the affected areas using your soft scrubbing brush. Be very careful with the amount of pressure you use to scrape away the film; scraping too hard can harm the tree and leave it susceptible to pest infestations and disease.

❧ Copper Spraying

You can also apply a copper-sulfate solution to the bark of your trees during warm seasons to kill the tree lichens and prevent them from growing back. It will not work in cold weather. Also, keep in mind that a copper-sulfate application will only take care of the fungus, as it does not target the algae side of the lichen outbreak. For this reason, you may need to follow up a copper-sulfate application with a secondary treatment of soap solution.

❧ Lime Sulfur

Another common treatment used to manage tree lichens is lime sulfur applications. Lime sulfur can be purchased in the horticulture section of any local home improvement or garden store in powder or liquid form. Typically, you can acquire a quality product under $20 or so. Just be careful not to contaminate the tree roots or leaves with this product, as it can cause severe damage to the tree.

❧ Environmental Modification

For those who like an organic, Eco-friendly approach, you can attempt some environmental modifications to prevent tree lichens from developing on your trees. You see, tree lichens grow best in partly sunny, moist environments. So if you change these conditions around your trees by thinning out tree canopies, trimming leaves, or removing sprinkler systems, you can abate tree lichen development for seasons to come.

Evergreens and Deciduous Trees

The two main types of trees are evergreens and deciduous. Evergreens, such as pine trees and conifers, never lose their foliage, and remain green all year long. Hence the name, “ever-green!” Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall and stay dormant throughout winter; and then re-bloom in the spring. Common deciduous trees include Maple trees, Apple trees, Oak trees, and Ash trees.

Environmental Benefits

As mentioned, trees swap carbon dioxide and oxygen with all living organisms in the world. They breathe in carbon dioxide and we breathe it out, and they breathe out oxygen and we breathe it in! This is a wonderful and vital part of our ecosystem. But there are more environmental benefits trees have to offer. For example, trees provide the wood and pulp our society uses to build homes and structures, and to manufacture paper products. They also provide homes and habitats for thousands of living creatures and mammals, including insects, birds, woodland animals, and more.

Comfort and Charm

Trees also provide us with enhanced comfort and aesthetic appeal. We use trees and ornamental shrubs to decorate our landscapes, making them beautiful and inviting. But also, it provides our lawns with shade from an unrelenting sun. Not only do trees provide our properties with shade and beauty, they can also be strategically placed to reduce outside noise and improve energy efficiency!

Delicious Food to Eat

One great thing about trees is that many produce delicious fruits and nuts! We get the privilege of indulging in sweet, tart, and ripened fruits, like apples, oranges, lemons, limes, pears, peaches, cherries, and more. And we also get to enjoy delicious and rich legumes, like almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans, hazelnuts, and more!

The Parts of a Tree

There are many parts of a tree. These parts include the roots, trunk, crown, canopy, leaves, branches, bark, cambium, xylem, heartwood, and pith. Be sure to read next month’s blog to learn some interesting details about all the various parts of a tree!
