What Does Tree Windthrow Mean?

Now that summer is coming to a close, we can expect to see the weather and climate change too. This might include some colder temperatures, higher precipitations, and even heavy winds. Especially with Hurricane Dorian in effect, we are not unreasonable to have concerns about heavy wind storms.

In fact, many homeowners have asked about wind tree damage, and what they can do to prevent it from happening to their own landscaping trees. One such consequence of heavy winds is falling or toppling trees, an occurrence known as windthrow.

Continue reading to learn more about tree windthrow, including how to help prevent it and what you can do if a tree falls on your property.

Tree Windthrow

Also known as blowdown, tree windthrow is a term used in the forestry industry to describe trees that fall over or uproot as a result of heavy winds and storms. Tree species that tend to be more susceptible to windthrow are willow white spruce, cedar, and white pine. However, all trees can fall over in inclement weather conditions, especially if they are malnourished, dying, or dead.

Common Signs of a Dead or Dying Tree

The most vulnerable trees to blowdown are sick, dying, and dead trees. These trees lack the stability and strength needed to withstand inclement weather such as heavy wind storms. You will know if your trees are dying or already dead by looking for some common signs.

Dead Trees – Gray inner flesh of twigs and bark, pest infestations, etc.

Dying Trees – Pest infestations, bark damage, fungal growth, leaf discoloration or loss, etc.

Uprooted Trees

When winds and storms are strong enough, or if a tree is large enough, it can come out of the ground completely. This is known as tree uprooting. When the root ball and connecting roots are exposed after a tree falls down, the tree is described as being uprooted. See our blog, “Is it Possible to Replant Uprooted Trees?” to learn your options for uprooted trees. If your tree cannot be transplanted, it will likely need to be removed.
