How to Treat Tree Fungus in November

Because the winter season brings with it moist and dull conditions, it is an ultimate time for fungi to grow. Since tree bark retains moisture well this time of year, fungal outbreaks tend to happen on trees. This is detrimental for tree health since it can lead to poor growth in new branches, spring shoots, leaves and buds.

If your landscaping trees are ridden with fungi growth, you can opt for an annual fungicidal spraying treatment, or you can make your own homemade fungal solution and apply it yourself. To make your own tree fungi solution, all you need are a few simple supplies and a 30 minute window to get rid of tree fungus for good.

What You Will Need

The only supplies you will need to get rid of tree fungus include a pair of pruning shears, household bleach, a large bucket, garbage bags, and water. It helps to have a garden hose.

How to Remove Tree Fungus

Start by combing 1 part bleach with 3 parts water in your large bucket. Then place the blades of your pruning shears in the mixture and allow it to sit for five minutes.

After five minutes, rinse the shears clean. This ensures that no additional infection is transmitted when cutting back bark.

Next, using your pruning shears, cut off any affected branches.

Promptly transfer the removed limbs into a plastic garbage bag to prevent spreading. You do not want to use these infected branches in your compost or landscaping.

Annual Tree Fungal Treatment Solution

To better manage fungal growths in fall and winter, you can make a homemade fungal treatment for annual use. Here’s what you will need:

⛋ Long-Sleeved Shirt
⛋ Long Pants
⛋ Dust Mask
⛋ Safety Glasses
⛋ Household Bleach
⛋ Bucket
⛋ Long-Handled Spoon
⛋ Garden Hose
⛋ Pruning Saw
⛋ Bordeaux Mixture (Recommended: Bonide® Natural Copper Fungicide)
⛋ Garden Sprayer

How to Apply an Annual Treatment

Put on all of your protective gear. Then make your solution.

Mix your tree fungal solution by combining 1 tablespoon of Bordeaux mixture in 1 gallon of water, and then transfer the mixture to your garden sprayer.

Using your garden sprayer, generously spray all limbs and leaves with your solution. In February, once tree buds begin to swell up, repeat this step for added protection.

The copper sulfate and hydrated lime in the Bordeaux are the key ingredients to tree fungal treatment and prevention.

Tree spraying is a common preventative tree care practice that involves chemical and fungal applications to keep nuisance, damaging pests away. It is a very important part of your tree care routine, especially if you live near wooded or forested areas, or near a large body of water. Insects like beetles, spiders, mites, and more are common threats to both deciduous and evergreen trees, so tree spraying is a method that can help protect trees and withstand the surrounding nuisance insect threats all year long.

Not all trees will require spraying; it is important to discuss your individual tree care needs with a licensed tree service contractor who can give you professional recommendations for your unique landscape.

Trees Stay Green All Season

Tree spraying is a holistic tree care technique that will maintain healthy, strong, and resilient trees through the entire active season. This means greener, fuller canopies and higher-quality fruits and nuts. It is performed in the early spring, and consists of at least two or more applications throughout the year. Most often, tree spraying is not necessary for regular residential properties, but it is a common practice for commercial landscapes, as well as, farms, vineyards, orchards, and more.

Common Benefits of Tree Spraying

As mentioned, tree spraying protects trees from nuisance pests, keeping them healthy and lush all season. But there are a few more advantages of spraying trees. It also wards of tree diseases like fungi, bacteria, and other infections. It also helps control the spread of these diseases.

Here are some more benefits of tree spraying:
