❶ Location

In order for a tree to successfully acclimate to its new environment and grow, the location has to be perfect. You should plant your trees in an area where the soil composition is good for tree growth, and there is plenty of sunlight and room for the canopy to grow. Keep in mind, you should never plant trees beneath power lines. See our blog, “What You Need to Know about Planting Trees Near Utility Lines” to learn all the reasons why this is incredibly hazardous.

❷ Water

After a tree is newly transplanted, water is one of the most vital elements for successful acclimation and growth. The general rule of thumb is to water your tree once a week during growing season; more or less depending on the amount of rain. Place a garden hose at the base and let the water flow slowly for a couple of hours; then wait a few days before re-watering. If the soil around the tree is still moist one inch in, it does not need to be watered just yet. If it is dry 1 inch into the soil, it is ready for more water. See our blog, “Do I Need to Water My Trees?” to learn some fundamental tree watering tips.

❸ Mulch

Aside from aesthetics, mulch plays a major role in tree care. It retains moisture in the soil, allowing the tree to have access to sufficient amounts of water. Mulching also provides tree root insulation, regulates temperature, protects against lawnmower damage, and much more. Mulch around the base of your tree, and apply a new layer each spring for best results. See our blog, “Mulching Tips for Tree Care” to learn what you need to do to get started.

❹ Fertilizer

Since we clear out natural plant matter in our yards, like weeds, twigs, leaves, and underbrush debris, there is very little organic nutrition left for trees to use. To supplement this natural nutrient deficiency, all you have to do is fertilize. Using fertilizer on trees can be a tricky project, and easily sabotaged. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged to hire a professional tree care company for help with your first tree fertilization experience.

❺ Pruning

Once you have established a plan for planting, watering, mulching, and fertilizing, your last obligation is routine tree care. Every season, your trees will need a specific set of services. The most important service for healthy trees is pruning. Many of the benefits gained from having your trees pruned are aesthetic, providing a better-looking tree with beautiful foliage and growth. However, several others are related to tree health and sustenance. See our blog, “The Advantages of Tree Pruning” to learn them all.
